Waste Collector’s Toolkit of KEPRO
On 14 November 2023: Sustainable Waste Management Act 2022, Environmental Management and Co-Ordination (Extended Producer Responsibility) Regulations and other laws legally stipulate the duty and responsibilities of producer responsibility organizations (PROs) in Kenya. Kenya Extended Producer Responsibility Organization (KEPRO) is one of those PROs, which is focused on non-hazardous plastic recycling. ETA was invited to a launching workshop of Kenya Extended Producer Responsibility Organization (KEPRO) for waste collector’s toolkit and explored cooperation possibilities with various players in this sector.
County-Level Policy Development for Solid Waste Management
On 7 March 2023: Under the Sustainable Waste Management Act 2022, Kenyan government has been trying to enforce “Environmental Management and Co-Ordination (Extended Producer Responsibility) Regulations”. These legal frameworks require the Kenyan counties to develop and implement relevant policies to solve solid waste management and recycling issues. In this regard, ETA and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Solid Waste Advisor jointly provided an advisory meeting to the Governor and Deputy Governor of Mombasa County for giving guidance to develop county-level policy for material recovery facility and extended producer responsibility.
