Visit of Sanow Industry to Kenya
On 25 September – 6 October 2017: ETA welcomed Mr. Hirotani, Corporate Advisor of Sanow Industry for Overseas Business Development to Kenya for a joint business development. Sanow Industry is a Japan-based limited company designing and manufacturing vacuum drying and fermentation machines, for which it holds a patent right. The vacuum drying machines can compost organic waste and agricultural residues or extract bio fuel from waste oil or other residues while fermentation machines generate high quality organic fertilizer. Accompanied by ETA, Sanow Industry’s Corporate Advisor met with potential clients & business partners both in the public and private sectors in Kenya and discussed their needs on Sanow’s technology.

New Regulation on Plastic Bags
On 24 September 2017: ETA participated in a stakeholders’ seminar about the ban of plastic bags in Kenya which came into effect on 28 August 2017. This seminar was held at Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) by the National Environment Management Authority of Kenya (NEMA) and the Kenyan Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources. Exhibitors demonstrated alternative products for carrier bags, which were banned through this regulation.

Training on Non- Revenue Water
On 3-28 July 2017: Water Services Providers Association (WASPA) of Kenya facilitated a one-month interactive online training for a better manage of non-revenue water by using information communication technology (ICT). ETA obtained this training which was given by a South Africa based company called Upande Limited. This training covered the following aspects:

  • Introduction of ICT for water sanitation and hygiene (WASH).
  • Comparison between conventional management systems and ICT-based management for non-revenue water.
  • Principles of how to design an internet-based app (application software) for the management and how to use it.
  • Final project involving a design of apps for meter reading / fault reporting.

The training also brought experts and participants from water utilities, regulators, and private sector organizations together to collaboratively discuss how ICT can be used to reduce non-revenue water, and to improve service provision, customer satisfaction, revenue collection, and asset management.

JICA Networking Fair for ABE Initiative
On 16 May 2017: In the course of a recruitment activity, ETA’s director with a staff in charge of human resources management visited a networking fair of Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to look for a motivated disciplined new staff. The interviewed candidates just came back to Kenya after a scholarship program called ABE Initiative (Master’s Degree and Internship Program of African Business Education Initiative for Youth), which was launched by Japanese Prime Minister ABE in TICAD V (Tokyo International Conference for African Development) in 2013.

Workshop for Development of WASPA Strategic Plan 2018 – 2022
On 4 May 2017: ETA participated in a stakeholders’ workshop for a development of Strategic Plan 2018 – 2022 of Kenyan Water Services Providers Association (WASPA) in Kisii Town, Kisii County.
In this workshop and in the subsequent bi-monthly meeting of WASPA on the next day, ETA learned the purpose and function of the WASPA Strategic Plan 2018-2022 and the business development committee of WASPA. It was also discussed with foreign water experts how to avoid none-revenue water and what countermeasures have been taken so far here in Kenya.

Bi-monthly Meeting of WASPA in Nakuru
On 3 March 2017: On behalf of ETA’s client, Wellthy Corporation, ETA’s staff attended a bi-monthly meeting of Kenyan Water Services Providers Association (WASPA) in Nakuru Town, Nakuru County. ETA promoted its client’s technology to dozens of water service providers at this event.

Itare Dam Tour in Molo
On 2 March 2017: ETA participated in a full day technical tour to the construction site of the Itare Dam in Molo, Nakuru County. Itare Dam is one of the flagship projects of the Kenyan government based on the National Water Master Plan. The executing agency of this project is Rift Valley Water Services Board (RVWSB) and the dam will have a capacity to supply 100,000m3/day. At this occasion, ETA learned some new funding schemes in the Kenyan water sector.

Kenya Water Act 2016 Workshop
On 17 February 2017: ETA participated in a sensitization workshop on the Kenyan Water Act 2016 at the Panafric Hotel, Nairobi. The training was facilitated by WASPA and presented by Prof. Mumma, a renowned lawyer in Kenya, who was involved in the drafting of the Water Act 2016. The workshop focused on the main differences between the Water Act 2002 and 2016. ETA learned how the roles and responsibilities of Kenyan government bodies in the water sector will change after a transition period.

The First Post ABE Initiative Forum
On 10 February 2017: ETA attended a forum at Sarova Panafric Hotel in Nairobi which was hosted by JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) and co-organized by JICA Ex-Participants Alumni of Kenya (JEPAK) for the first scholars, who came back to Kenya after the post-graduate study of ABE Initiative. This initiative also called “Master’s Degree and Internship Program of African Business Education Initiative for Youth” is a Japanese government’s scholarship for African to study and experience an internship in Japan.
